IT Support Issues: Streamline and Save £££s

Fact: Desk-side visits account for 13% of PC support incidents, but consume 46% of the average PC support budget.

Fact: With HP’s new business computers, you can cut desk-side visits by 60%, and virtually eliminate manual inventorying. And you can reduce the time taken to deploy a security patch on 5,000 PCs from 253 hours to just 12.

Identifying Key Cost Areas

The top three priorities for a CIO are: improving business processes, reducing company-wide operating costs, and attracting, retaining and growing customer relationships, according to Gartner’s 2006 CIO Agenda. It doesn’t say anything about fixing broken computers, taking an inventory or installing patches and updates. These tasks, and others like them, consume a jaw-dropping 91 percent of IT spending.

The small, everyday things eat up IT budgets. Things like taking an asset inventory, providing desk-side technical support when a problem can’t be fixed over the phone, or manually installing patches because machines are switched off. These routine tasks, multiplied by the number of computers in the organisation, become very expensive.

Desk-side visits.

On average, a user calls technical support 1.35 times a month. A problem solved on the first call costs around £10. If it requires desk-side support, it costs at least four times as much to fix. This is why desk-side visits account for 13 percent of PC support incidents, but consume 46 percent of the average PC support budget. Even a small improvement could yield a big savings. Inventory.

Most companies struggle to keep accurate and up-to-date inventories of their hardware and software. This is because up to a third of computers may not be switched on or available when the inventory is conducted. This means that many machines require manual inspection – a time-consuming process.

Patch management.

The same problem dogs automated updates and patching. Leaving computers on overnight for updates is only a partial solution, becauseusers still switch some of them off or take them home. Updating during the day disrupts their work. Besides the cost of time, this can create a window of vulnerability because machines go unpatched in the face of a known security threat.

By streamlining these tasks, HP’s new business computers can dramatically cut the cost of IT support. In large-scale trials, Intel® found that they could cut the number of desk-side visits by 60 percent, virtually eliminate manual inventorying and reduce the time taken to deploy a security patch on 5,000 PCs from 253 hours to just 12.
